What is Speech-Language Pathology?

Speech-language therapy is all about improving a child's communication skills - their comprehension and use of spoken language.

In speech-language therapy, children may be working to improve their speech skills:

1. Articulation - their ability to produce speech sounds correctly.
2. Voice - their pitch, loudness, quality or nasality of their speech.
3. Fluency (stuttering) - their ability to speak smoothly.

In speech-language therapy, children may be working to improve their language skills:

1. Oral language comprehension:
understanding spoken language (e.g. following directions, understanding vocabulary, understanding new information presented orally, remembering what people say, etc.).

2. Oral language expression:
expressing thoughts using correct words, word order and organization (e.g. asking and answering questions, saying what they are thinking, staying on topic, finding and using appropriate vocabulary, expressing thoughts in an organized way, etc.).

3. Pragmatic language:
social communication skills (e.g. knowing how and when to communicate effectively with different people in different situations, using appropriate conversation skills, turn taking, eye contact, social distance, etc.).
